  • More about Long Silence: The Story of James Hanratty and the A6 Murder by Valerie Storie, the Woman Who Lived to Tell the Tale

Valerie Storie and Michael Gregsten were the victims of James Hanratty in the notorious 'A6 Murder' in August 1961. Michael was shot dead and Valerie was raped, shot, and left for dead. Hanratty was one of the last men in the UK to be hanged in 1962, but DNA evidence proved his guilt in 2002. Valerie's posthumous autobiography, The Long Silence, details the 'cat and mouse drive' as Michael and Valerie tried to deter and thwart Hanratty.

In August 1961, at the age of 22, Valerie Storie and Michael Gregsten became the unfortunate victims of James Hanratty in the notorious 'A6 Murder.' The harrowing ordeal lasted five hours, culminating in a layby on the A6 in Bedfordshire, where Michael was tragically shot dead, while Valerie suffered a brutal rape, shot wound, and left for dead. Miraculously, she managed to survive, but the aftermath left her paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair until her passing in 2016.

In 1962, Hanratty became one of the last men in the UK to face the gallows, igniting a forty-year-long debate that raged on as many believed in his innocence, even after DNA evidence proved his guilt in 2002. Valerie, however, had no doubts from the beginning, and she was able to identify Hanratty in an identity parade. Despite her intention to write a book, Valerie remained silent for over thirty-five years, enduring relentless media pressure to speak out.

The Long Silence, published posthumously, serves as Valerie's autobiography, offering a comprehensive account of the 'cat and mouse drive' she and Michael engaged in, as they attempted to deter and thwart Hanratty's seemingly indecisive actions on numerous occasions. Through her detailed narrative, readers gain a deeper understanding of the tragic events that unfolded and the resilience displayed by Valerie in the face of unimaginable adversity.
