In the mid-1960s, as a young high school student, John Brumley had the privilege of visiting Lookout Cave for the very first time. Upon entering the cave, he was immediately captivated by its exceptional nature. Located in north central Montana, Lookout Cave had been discovered in 1920, but it wasn't until 1969 that a field crew from the University of Montana embarked on an excavation to explore a significant portion of this remote site. The excavation yielded a remarkable collection of over one thousand items made of normally perishable wood, feathers, and sinew. The absence of moisture and direct sunlight within the cave created ideal conditions for the preservation of these artifacts. This fully illustrated volume showcases these remarkable items and provides valuable insights into Plains culture and the centuries-old utilization of this well-concealed space.
