  • More about Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War

The book "Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War" was written in 1939 by Major, the Hon Gerald French to defend Lord Chelmsford's actions and reputation during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. French used inaccurate source material and false reports to shield Chelmsford from the Isandlwana debacle and lay blame on Colonel Anthony Durnford. The book provides a comprehensive coverage of the war, but French's alterations of a map to support his conclusions have been criticized. Despite this, the book is highly recommended for those with a historical interest in the events of 1879 and the demise of the Zulu nation.

The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, marked by the epic Zulu victory at the Battle of Isandlwana, sparked significant controversy. Lord Chelmsford, the General Officer commanding the invasion force, faced severe criticism from journalists and parliament for his actions and conduct at Isandlwana. In 1939, on the sixtieth anniversary of the battle, Major, the Hon Gerald French, authored a controversial yet captivating book titled Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War. The book aimed to defend Lord Chelmsford's actions and reputation, with the foreword written by General Sir Bindon Blood, who served under Chelmsford in India and was a devoted admirer.

However, French made a critical error in using selective inaccurate source material and false reports to shield Lord Chelmsford from the Isandlwana debacle. He deliberately altered a map to suggest that the primary cause of the defeat was the retreat of the Natal Native Contingent, which created a gap in the defense, allowing an unopposed Zulu advance. This misinformation was intended to lay the blame on Colonel Anthony Durnford, Royal Engineers, who was present at Isandlwana.

Despite these flaws, Lord Chelmsford and the Zulu War remains a comprehensive and detailed account of the Anglo-Zulu War, covering the initial invasion to the final battle of Ulundi. It has been extensively used as a bibliography by authors addressing the subject of the Anglo-Zulu War. The book is highly recommended for those with a historical interest in the events of 1879 and the demise of the Zulu nation.
