The fauna of the Sierra Gorda region of Mexico has been explored through the examination of archaeological ceramics, shedding light on the past inhabitants of this area. The Sierra Gorda was declared a "Biosphere Reserve" in 1997, covering approximately 400,000 hectares and boasting a rich biodiversity. This reserve is home to over 1800 plant species, 124 fungi, and 550 vertebrate species, among other diverse elements. As part of the Northern Archaeological Project of the State of Querétaro, Mexico (PANQ), this book presents ceramic representations of the region's fauna, connecting them to the oral traditions preserved by the local inhabitants. Through this analysis, the book highlights the deep interdependence between humans and animals and explores broader cultural interconnections across Mesoamerica. While the book also analyzes some of these cultural traits, its primary focus is on presenting the archaeological evidence recovered by the project since 1990 in this relatively unknown region of ancient Mexico.
