El léxico de la fauna y la flora ha conservado numerosas raíces antiguas, a menudo sustráticas. La Península Ibérica ofrece, en este sentido, un terreno de investigación especialmente favorable debido a la presencia de sustratos paleohispánicos documentados, uno de los cuales, el euskera, sigue vivo.
