  • More about LSD: My problem child

Albert Hofmann synthesized LSD in 1938 and accidentally discovered its profound effects on himself in 1943. He spent years researching sacred plants and isolating and synthesizing the active compounds in the Psilocybe mexicana mushroom, which he named psilocybin and psilocin. In 2007, he asked Amanda Feilding to publish his Problem Child and approved a new and updated translation of his autobiography.

Albert Hofmann, a renowned chemist who passed away in 2008 at the age of 102, made a groundbreaking discovery when he synthesized lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for the first time in 1938. However, the initial results of animal tests were deemed unremarkable, leading to the abandonment of the chemical. Undeterred by conventional wisdom, Hofmann's intuition led him to revisit the synthesis of LSD in 1943. To his astonishment, he experienced profound effects on himself, which marked a significant turning point in his career. While Hofmann's work resulted in the development of several important drugs, including methergine, hydergine, and dihydroergotamine, it was LSD that truly shaped his legacy.

Driven by his newfound fascination with LSD, Hofmann dedicated years to researching sacred plants. His tireless efforts led him to isolate and synthesize the active compounds found in the Psilocybe mexicana mushroom, which he named psilocybin and psilocin. During the 1960s, Hofmann forged friendships with notable figures such as Aldous Huxley, Gordon Wasson, and Timothy Leary. He continued to work at Sandoz, a pharmaceutical company, until 1971, when he retired as the Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Hofmann served as a member of the Nobel Prize Committee and was recognized by Time magazine as one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. His contributions to the field of chemistry and his exploration of the psychedelic realm have left an indelible mark on modern society.

Before his passing in 2008, Hofmann approached Amanda Feilding with a request to publish his Problem Child. Shortly before his death, he also approved a new and updated translation of his autobiography, which was first published by McGraw Hill in 1979. This remarkable work, which has never been printed before, is now presented to readers for the first time.

Albert Hofmann's life and legacy continue to inspire scientists, researchers, and enthusiasts alike. His groundbreaking discoveries and unwavering pursuit of knowledge have left an enduring impact on the world of chemistry and human consciousness.
