A remarkable and personal insight into the Black student experience at Indiana University in the early 1960s is provided by Lester Thompson's Lucky Medicine. In 1961, a young African American man from Indianapolis arrived at Indiana University Bloomington with the goal of becoming a doctor. Lester kept a detailed and intimate diary for the next three years, documenting his journey to graduation. Lucky Medicine takes readers back to Lester's long-ago journal, where he shares stories from his college years at Indiana University with honesty, humor, and a healthy dose of self-reflection.

Fascinating glimpses emerge of Black Greek life during this period, including the construction of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity house and the successes, struggles, and social lives of its members. Lester's student years were characterized by hard work, but they were also filled with fun and drama. He recalls his time studying at the university library, falling in and out of love multiple times, becoming friends with fellow fraternity brother Booker T. Jones, receiving an unforgettable invitation to meet with George Wallace, and engaging in an epic brawl with limestone cutters at the 24-Hour Grill.

Lucky Medicine offers a close-up and unforgettable look at IU student life just before the sweeping social changes of the 1960s, when students of color accounted for less than 2 percent of the Indiana University student body. The book provides a unique perspective on a period of significant transition and change, offering a valuable contribution to the understanding of Black student life and the broader social context of the time.
