Luigi Pericle, a multifaceted artist, left an indelible mark on the art world during the second half of the 20th century. Hailing from Italy, he was a painter, illustrator, and scholar, renowned for his contributions. Pericle's artistic journey began as an illustrator, where he gained widespread recognition in the 1950s for creating the beloved character Max the Marmot. However, it was his profound, enigmatic, and multi-layered paintings that truly captured the attention of the art community. During the 1960s, his works, which reflected his personal and metaphysical interpretation of post-war abstraction, were showcased at numerous venues in Britain.

Yet, a remarkable turn occurred in Pericle's life. He abruptly retreated from the art system, choosing to dedicate himself to painting, writing, and studying esoteric philosophy in the secluded house he shared with his wife, Orsolina, on Monte Verit  in the Ticino region of Switzerland. It was only in 2016 that his vast oeuvre was dramatically rediscovered when the contents of his former residence were revealed. Since then, a tireless effort has been underway to restore, catalogue, and research his extensive collection. This ongoing project is overseen by Asconas Archivio Luigi Pericle, in collaboration with the exhibition organizers.

This captivating publication, which accompanies an exhibition at the Estorick Collection in London, presents a comprehensive catalogue of Pericle's works, accompanied by insightful essays by esteemed scholars. It serves as a testament to the artist's enduring legacy and the ongoing appreciation of his artistic contributions. Through his visionary paintings and profound exploration of the human condition, Luigi Pericle continues to inspire and captivate audiences, leaving a lasting impression on the world of art.
