  • More about Lung Inflammation in Health and Disease, Volume II

Lung diseases are a major cause of death and disability worldwide, with 65 million people suffering from COPD and 334 million from asthma. Systemic inflammation can induce and exacerbate local inflammatory diseases, and the co-morbidity of two or more local inflammatory diseases often occurs. Current treatment options are neither always effective nor condition-specific, and there is a desperate need for novel therapeutics. Great progress has been made in recent years in understanding the molecular geneses, regulatory mechanisms, signaling pathways, and cellular processes within lung disease, as well as basic and clinical technology, drug discovery, diagnoses, treatment options, and predictive prognoses. This is the first text to aggregate these developments, and the editors hope it will help to direct future research and result in the development of novel therapeutics.

Lung diseases are a major global cause of death and disability, affecting approximately 65 million people with COPD and 334 million with asthma. Each year, millions of individuals develop and succumb to lung infections like pneumonia and tuberculosis. Furthermore, systemic inflammation can exacerbate local inflammatory diseases in the lungs, leading to a vicious cycle. Research has shown that patients with asthma, COPD, and other lung diseases often exhibit both systemic and local inflammation, and the co-occurrence of two or more local inflammatory diseases is common. For instance, rheumatoid arthritis frequently coexists with and promotes the development of pulmonary hypertension, significantly impacting the quality of life and potentially resulting in death for some patients.

Current treatment options for lung disease are limited and often ineffective, particularly for patients with coexistent conditions. There is a pressing need for novel therapeutics in this field. Additionally, our understanding of the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying most major lung diseases remains incomplete, hindering the development of effective treatments, especially for cases involving coexistent lung diseases with other inflammatory disorders.

However, significant progress has been made in recent years in various aspects of lung disease research. Experts from around the world have contributed to two comprehensive volumes that highlight the latest advances in understanding lung inflammation in health and disease. These volumes cover a wide range of topics, including molecular genetics, regulatory mechanisms, signaling pathways, and cellular processes associated with lung inflammation. They also discuss the latest technological developments, drug discovery, diagnostic techniques, treatment options, and predictive prognoses for lung diseases.

This first text to aggregate these developments aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in the field. By bringing together experts from diverse disciplines, the volumes offer a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, and healthcare professionals seeking to better understand and treat lung inflammation-related disorders. The insights and advancements presented in these volumes have the potential to improve patient outcomes and enhance our understanding of the complex mechanisms underlying lung diseases.
