  • More about M36/M36B1 Tank Destroyer: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives

The US command strategy during WWII was to use tanks as armored spearheads to breach enemy positions, with enemy tanks being dealt with by specialized weapons, such as the 3-inch M10 and 90mm M3. The M36B1 was built from the ground-up as a tank destroyer, using a hull based on that of the M4A3 but featuring a standard M36 turret. Many of these vehicles were supplied to other nations and some survived as combat vehicles into the 21st century.

Prior to World War II, the United States military adopted a strategy that prioritized the use of tanks as an armored spearhead to breach enemy positions rather than engaging enemy tanks in direct combat. The primary weaponry for dealing with enemy tanks was specialized tank destroyers, equipped with powerful guns capable of defeating German armor.

The M10 tank destroyer, equipped with a 3-inch gun, was considered superior to its predecessors but still found inadequate against the increasing weight of German armor. To address this, a larger gun, the 90mm M3, was introduced in a new, more spacious open-topped turret mounted on 100 specially designed hulls. This modification was known as the M36B2.

To supplement the M36B2 production, some M10A1 tanks were remanufactured and converted into M36B1 tank destroyers. These vehicles utilized the hulls of the M4A3 but featured the standard M36 turret. It was evident from the examination of rare surviving M36B1 vehicles that their hulls were specifically manufactured for this purpose, rather than being mere conversions of M4A3 hulls.

While the US antitank doctrine underwent significant changes after World War II, rendering all tank destroyers obsolete, many of these vehicles were supplied to other nations. Some even survived into the 21st century, serving as combat vehicles in various conflicts.

The M36B1 tank destroyer played a significant role in the defense of the United States during World War II, and its legacy continues to be felt in the modern military. Its unique design and powerful armament make it a noteworthy example of military engineering and innovation.
