Niccolò Machiavelli's political thought is explored in depth in Machiavelli and the Politics of Democratic Innovation, which offers a fresh theoretical framework for democratic practice. The book critically and creatively juxtaposes certain concepts drawn from Machiavellis work in order to produce new political insights.

Through his rearrangement of Machiavellian concepts, Christopher Holman identifies two unique ideas in Machiavelli. The first, drawn primarily from The Prince, portrays the individual human being as a creative subject that seeks to externalize desire through political creation. The second, drawn primarily from The Discourses on Livy, portrays the democratic republic as a regime in which this desire for creative self-expression is universalized, allowing all citizens to affirm their psychic orientation toward innovation through equal access to political institutions and orders.

To ensure that these institutions and orders function as media for the expression of fundamental human creativity, they must be arranged in a way that allows for continual interrogation and refinement. In the final instance, a new ethical ground for the normative defense of democratic life is constructed, grounded in the orientation of individual beings toward novelty and innovation.

This book offers a valuable contribution to the study of Machiavelli and political thought, providing a fresh perspective on the relationship between individual agency, political institutions, and democratic innovation. It will be of interest to scholars and students of politics, philosophy, and history.
