Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish architect, designer, and painter, emerged as one of the pioneering figures in modern architecture and design during the early 20th century. While he may not have received widespread acclaim in his hometown of Glasgow during his lifetime, his innovative and bold approach to simplicity and poetic detail struck a chord with modernists across Europe. Mackintosh's avant-garde style encompassed a diverse range of media and stylistic devices. His multifaceted oeuvre included architecture, furniture design, graphic design, landscape architecture, and flower studies. He embraced strong lines, elegant proportions, and natural motifs, seamlessly blending an adventurous dose of japonisme with a modernist sensibility for function. Mackintosh favored bold black typography, restrained shapes, and tall, generous windows that flooded rooms with light. Much of his work was done in collaboration with his wife, fellow artist Margaret Macdonald, who played a significant role in shaping his artistic vision. Together, they formed half of the influential Glasgow collective known as "The Four," alongside Margaret's sister, Frances, and her husband, Herbert MacNair. On the continent, the "Glasgow Style" garnered immense popularity. Artists of the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau in Italy, Germany, and particularly Austria were greatly influenced by its rectilinear yet lyrical forms.

In this introductory book, we delve into Mackintosh's practice across art, architecture, and design to explore his unique blend of the statuesque and sensual and its profound influence on modernist expression across Europe. Featured projects include his comprehensive scheme for the Willow Tea Rooms and the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art, widely regarded as Mackintosh's masterpiece. Through his visionary designs and innovative approach, Mackintosh left an indelible mark on the world of architecture and design, inspiring generations of artists and designers to push the boundaries of creativity and experimentation.
