Hezekiah Haynes was a Puritan who emigrated to New England, fought in the British Civil Wars, and became Cromwell's ruler of the east of England. He was hampered by the limits of the early modern state and Cromwell's contradictory political and religious ideas. The Restoration saw him imprisoned in the Tower before emerging to return to the community. This book appeals to specialists and students of early modern English and American history.

Hezekiah Haynes was deeply influenced by the Puritanism of his father's network and was part of a community that sought to distance itself from the Laudianism of Charles I. After returning to fight in the British Civil Wars, Haynes rose to become Cromwell's ruler of the east of England, tasked with bringing about a godly revolution. As he gained prominence, Haynes established his own political and religious network, which included a familial connection to Cromwell. Haynes served as one of Cromwell's Major-Generals and was responsible for security and reforming manners. However, he faced challenges due to the limitations of the early modern state and Cromwell's contradictory political and religious ideas.

The Restoration saw Haynes imprisoned in the Tower before he was able to return to the community he had grown up in. He continued to maintain ties with some of the individuals he had worked with for Cromwell and the kin he had left behind in New England, as he navigated the norms of early modern life.

This book will be of interest to specialists in the field, as well as students enrolled in courses on early modern English and American history, and those with a broader interest in the period.
