Gail Mallatratt, a self-proclaimed "color person," has a deep appreciation for color that only grows with time. She believes that color and storytelling go hand in hand, and that it has the power to inspire and motivate her. Mallatratt's vibrant color printmaking is characterized by its striking and sometimes surreal quality, which makes familiar objects appear fresh and unfamiliar. She describes her artistic process as a conversation with the print as it comes off the woodcut, where she constantly adapts her color choices and techniques as the work progresses. According to Mallatratt, color is relative and can change depending on its surroundings. She emphasizes the importance of wearing various colors to feel "right" for the day, recognizing that color has a significant impact on one's spirit. Born in San Francisco, Mallatratt moved to London in 1972 with her English husband and their first child. She holds an MA degree in Teaching English from Stanford University, as well as degrees in Graphic Design and Information Design from the University of the Arts. Before dedicating herself to printmaking full-time, Mallatratt worked in corporate identity design. Her artistic journey has been marked by her studies in printmaking at Camberwell, where she was awarded an MA degree.
