The Maps of the Cavalry at Gettysburg: An Atlas of Mounted Operations from Brandy Station Through Falling Waters, June 9 - July 14, 1863, is a remarkable continuation of Bradley M. Gottfried's dedicated efforts to explore and visually represent the pivotal campaigns of the Civil Wars Eastern Theater. This seventh installment in the ongoing Savas Beatie Military Atlas Series showcases Gottfried's profound expertise in this field.

In his previous atlas, published in 2007, Gottfried had only scratched the surface of the cavalry's involvement in the Gettysburg campaign. However, this book goes into great depth, providing a comprehensive account that has never been achieved before. Gottfried begins by delving into the opening battle of the campaign at Brandy Station, providing a detailed account of the actions that unfolded. He then moves on to cover the subsequent engagements at Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville, where Jeb Stuart's cavalry successfully thwarted Alfred Pleasonton's attempts to locate Robert E. Lee's army by halting his probes toward the Blue Mountain passes.

The subsequent chapters detail the movements toward Gettysburg, encompassing the actions at Westminister, Hanover, and Hunterstown. The pivotal five major actions that took place on July 2-3 at Gettysburg are extensively covered, including the fierce fight at Brinkerhoff Ridge, as well as four additional actions on July 3. These actions involved Stuart's confrontation with David Gregg northeast of the town, Wesley Merritt's engagement along Emmitsburg Road, Judson Kilpatrick's actions near the base of Big Round Top, and Grumble Jones' near-destruction of the 6th U.S. Cavalry near Fairfield.

Furthermore, the cavalry played a crucial role during Lee's retreat to the Potomac River. The numerous battles at Monterrey Pass, Smithfield, Boonsboro, Funkstown, and Hagerstown were of immense significance to both sides and are meticulously detailed in the book. The conclusion of the atlas brings the story to a close with the fight at Falling Waters, followed by an epilogue that recounts events in Virginia until the end of July.

The Maps of the Cavalry at Gettysburg: An Atlas of Mounted Operations from Brandy Station Through Falling Waters, June 9 - July 14, 1863, is a testament to Gottfried's unwavering dedication to military history and his exceptional ability to convey complex information in a visually engaging and accessible manner. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the Civil War, particularly in the Eastern Theater, and will undoubtedly deepen our understanding of this pivotal period in American history.
