The B-24D bomber Hot Stuff, carrying Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews, crashed into a mountain in Iceland, killing all aboard except the tail gunner. Kathy Wilson's book, "Marshall's Great Captain: Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews," sheds light on Andrews's role in World War II and his relationship with George C. Marshall. Wilson suggests that Andrews was Marshall's first choice for Supreme Allied Commander.

On May 3, 1943, a remarkable sight unfolded at Royal Air Force Bovingdon Airfield near London, England, as dozens of airplanes took off and landed. Among the aircraft present that day was a B-24D bomber named Hot Stuff, which carried the Commanding General of US Forces in Europe, Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews. Speculation was rife that General George C. Marshall had summoned Andrews back to Washington, DC, leading many to believe that Andrews was in line for another promotion. Tragically, Andrews' journey would end in disaster. While attempting to land in Iceland, the bomber crashed into the side of a mountain, leaving no survivors except for the tail gunner. Andrews' personal papers were also destroyed in the accident. In his book, "Marshall's Great Captain: Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews," author Kathy Wilson delves into the extraordinary life and career of Andrews. This first biography dedicated to the namesake of Joint Base Andrews, sheds light on Andrews' pivotal role in orchestrating US involvement in World War II, as well as the professional relationship and rapport that Andrews and Marshall shared. Drawing on extensive research, Wilson raises Andrews' legacy to its rightful place within the annals of both air power and World War II history, and posits that there is a high probability that Andrews, rather than Dwight D. Eisenhower, was Marshall's first choice for the office of Supreme Allied Commander. Marshall recalled that Andrews was the only one he had a chance to prepare for such a command.
