Mary Mattingly is a visual artist who has made a significant impact on the art world through her innovative and thought-provoking projects. One of her most notable works is Swale, an edible landscape on a barge in New York City. Docked at public piers but following waterways common laws, Swale circumnavigates New York's public land laws, allowing anyone to pick free fresh food. This groundbreaking project instigated and co-created by Mattingly in 2017 is the first time New York City Parks is allowing people to publicly forage in over 100 years. It is currently considered a pilot project.
Mattingly's artistic vision extends beyond Swale. She recently launched Public Water with More Art, a project that combines art and water to create immersive experiences. In this project, she completed a two-part sculpture "Pull" for the International Havana Biennial, which involved pulling spherical ecosystems across Habana to Parque Central and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de la Habana. The sculpture showcased Mattingly's ability to blend art and science in innovative ways.
In 2018, Mattingly received a commission from BRIC Arts Media to build What Happens After. This project involved dismantling a military vehicle (LMTV) that had been to Afghanistan and deconstructing its mineral supply chain. Mattingly worked with a group of artists, including performance artists, veterans, and public space activists, to re-envision the vehicle for BRIC. The resulting installation was a powerful commentary on the consequences of war and the impact of military technology on society.
Mattingly's work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as Storm King, the International Center of Photography, the Seoul Art Center, the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Public Library, deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, and the Palais de Tokyo. Her work has been featured in renowned publications like Aperture Magazine, Art in America, Artforum, Art News, Sculpture Magazine, The New York Times, New York Magazine, and Fi.
Through her diverse range of projects, Mary Mattingly has demonstrated her ability to push the boundaries of art and explore the intersection of science, technology, and society. Her work inspires and challenges viewers to think critically about the world around them and the role that art plays in shaping our understanding of it. Mattingly's impact on the art world is undeniable, and her contributions will continue to be felt for years to come.
