The ancient cultures of Eastern Asia, the Near and Middle East, and the Mediterranean region are distinguished by remarkable scientific discoveries and advancements that are reflected in mythology and folklore. During the late Gothic period, this knowledge began to spread slowly, but during the Italian Renaissance, it gained significant momentum, initially encountering resistance from the Christian Church in Europe.

The accompanying exhibition catalog explores the latest research in the fields of science and technology in myth and art from ancient times to the Golden Age of the Arab-Islamic culture. It highlights early precise astronomical observations as well as the technology of automata and kinetic sculpture. Recent discoveries, such as the famous Greek mechanism of Antikythera, an analog computer, and the intricate rotating decks and floors of the Bankettsäle in the Palace of the Roman Emperor Nero, illustrate the significance of automating sculpture in the context of natural science in the Islamic-Arabic cultural region.

Exquisite artworks that retell ancient myths, animated sculpture models, remarkable scientific apparatuses, and automata from the Mediterranean and Islamic cultures are showcased in the exhibition. International authors and artists reflect the latest research in the history of science and technology in conjunction with art technology.

The exhibition will be held at the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung in Frankfurt/M. from 08.03.2023 to 21.01.2024. You can view the catalog: https://issuu.com/deutscher_kunstverlag/docs/blick_ins_buch_maschinenraum_der_goetter
