The present study presents the most comprehensive assessment of the relationship between mass shootings and background checks to date. While scholars have conducted both quantitative analyses and case studies on this topic, no books exist on this topic, and peer-reviewed articles have thus far failed to account for why a historical increase in societal armament arose in the first place, have not fully identified causal mechanisms and pathways that link mass shootings to gun purchases, and have treated the proposed causal relationship as being linear in nature. To address these gaps, the present study takes a multi-methodological approach comprised of case studies, quantitative analysis, and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA).

The study begins by examining the prevalence of mass shootings in the United States over the past three decades. It then explores the various background check policies and procedures in place in different states and at the federal level. The study employs a range of statistical techniques, including regression analysis, to examine the relationship between background checks and mass shootings.

The findings of the study suggest that background checks have a modest but statistically significant impact on reducing the likelihood of mass shootings. Specifically, the study finds that states that have implemented stricter background check policies have experienced a decrease in the number of mass shootings. However, the study also notes that other factors, such as mental health and access to firearms, also play a significant role in the occurrence of mass shootings.

The study also identifies several pathways and mechanisms that link mass shootings to post-shooting increases in gun purchases. These include the media's coverage of mass shootings, which can increase public fear and anxiety about gun violence; the perception of increased risk among gun owners, which can lead to increased purchases; and the availability of firearms in the United States, which can make it easier for individuals to obtain firearms.

The study concludes by offering several policy recommendations to address the issue of mass shootings. These include implementing stricter background check policies, improving mental health services, and restricting access to firearms. The study also emphasizes the importance of public education and awareness about gun violence to reduce the likelihood of mass shootings.

In conclusion, the present study provides a comprehensive assessment of the relationship between mass shootings and background checks. The findings suggest that background checks have a modest but statistically significant impact on reducing the likelihood of mass shootings. However, other factors, such as mental health and access to firearms, also play a significant role in the occurrence of mass shootings. The study identifies several pathways and mechanisms that link mass shootings to post-shooting increases in gun purchases, and offers several policy recommendations to address this issue.
