- More about Material Objects
The metaphysics of material objects explores how objects relate to their existence, nature, persistence, time, space, and paradoxes. It also examines views with radical consequences regarding the existence of composite material objects.
Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 75 pages
Publication date: 09 December 2021
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
This course examines central issues in the metaphysics of material objects. It is organized into four problem areas:
1. The first area explores the relationship between an object's parts and its existence, as well as its essence or nature.
2. The second area examines how an object persists through time, its location in spacetime, and how it changes.
3. The third area addresses paradoxes related to objects, such as paradoxes of coincidence, paradoxes of fission, and the problem of the many.
4. The fourth area explores views with radical implications for the existence of composite material objects, including mereological nihilism, ontological anti-realism, and deflationism.
Each of these problem areas will be explored in depth, with an emphasis on developing a clear understanding of the key concepts and arguments involved. The course will also consider the broader philosophical implications of these topics, such as their relevance to the study of other areas of philosophy, such as ethics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science.
By the end of this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the metaphysics of material objects and will be able to apply their knowledge to a range of philosophical problems and debates.
