  • More about Memories of a Northolt/Ealing Girl in WW2

During World War II, Northolt became a major airport defending London, and the suburbs. Rationing, air raid shelters, and gas masks were routine. Children were evacuated to places hundreds of miles away, and this book is written for grandparents, great-grandparents, teachers, and students to remember the brave children who lived through that time.

When World War II was declared on September 3, 1939, Northolt Airport became a vital hub in defending London and its suburbs. Life in the area underwent significant changes as food rationing, air raid shelters constructed beneath school playgrounds, and children as young as five being taught how to use gas masks became commonplace. The daily routine was punctuated by air raids during the day and the deafening sound of ack-ack guns. The most distressing aspect for parents, often mothers, and children of all ages was the loud noises that accompanied nighttime air raids. Fathers, who were serving abroad in the military, were absent.

Fortunately, our family was fortunate; our mother accompanied us to Derbyshire. Many children, accompanied by their siblings and even those who were alone, were sent to distant locations, spanning hundreds of miles. These children displayed remarkable bravery.

This book is intended for grandparents, great-grandparents, teachers, and students, as well as historians interested in World War II. My hope is that it will inspire them to share the stories of that era with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, ensuring that the memories of these events are preserved and never forgotten. We must never forget the sacrifices made during that time.
