The European Neolithic period stands out for its diverse range of practices involving human remains. Traditionally, the archaeological discourse on human beings, bodies, and death has relied on physical remains, particularly body burials. However, in recent years, the focus has shifted towards the study of fragmented and sometimes manipulated human remains, driven by the discovery of new archaeological sites that challenge traditional interpretations and concepts. This growing body of evidence prompts archaeologists to reexamine these issues from fresh perspectives.

The present volume brings together theoretical reflections on the significance of the human body and the perception of the transition from life to death, drawing upon insights from burial practices and archaeological findings. A particular emphasis is placed on Neolithic Middle Europe. Through interdisciplinary and theoretical approaches, case studies are employed to demonstrate that established practices and performative acts related to human remains are highly complex and should be approached from various angles.

The Sammelband, compiled from a conference held in Würzburg in 2019, encompasses contributions from various fields and Neolithic subperiods, including the Linearbandkeramik, Trichterbecherkultur, and subalpine Spätneolithikum. Prominent fund complexes are included within these sections.
