  • More about Michele Sibiloni: Nsenene

Nsenene are a delicacy and an important source of income in Uganda, but deforestation and climate change have decimated migratory insect populations and made cricket-harvesting difficult. Italian photographer Michele Sibiloni has captured the Ugandan cricket-harvest in his highly atmospheric visual idiom, which speaks volumes about the Ugandan situation and the future prospects for our planet.

Nsenene, also known as bush crickets, are a delicacy and a significant source of income in Uganda. These insects migrate twice a year, right after the two rainy seasons, and their migration is a spectacular sight. During cricket season, many Ugandans stay up till dawn to catch the critters, creating an eerie atmosphere with the lustrous greenish insects amid the nocturnal mist and the smoke of bonfires. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has identified nsenene as a promising source of food for the future, as they have high protein content and could reduce world hunger and improve food security. However, deforestation has decimated migratory insect populations in recent years, and some cricket species are now critically endangered. Climate change is also affecting the rains in Africa, making cricket-harvesting more unpredictable. Italian photographer Michele Sibiloni has captured the Ugandan cricket-harvest in his highly atmospheric visual idiom, which speaks volumes about the Ugandan situation and the future prospects for our planet. His immediate cinematographic sequences capture the Ugandan situation and the future prospects for our planet.
