  • More about Migration: A personal account of a family's history of Migration to and from South Africa over one hundred and fifty years

People have always migrated, often misunderstood and seen as a threat. The Empire days saw thousands invade underdeveloped countries, clearing the land of indigenous people. This made me curious about the psychological effects of leaving kith and kin and the trials and tribulations they encountered. Migrants become displaced, aliens, not knowing where they belong, and their stories need to be heard as their descendants need to know what they inherited from their forefathers.

While people have always migrated, they are often misunderstood and perceived as a threat. The Empire days are often overlooked, when thousands of people invaded underdeveloped countries, clearing the land of indigenous people.

After embarking on a mission to document the family's history for the grandchildren, I became deeply immersed in the migration experiences of the five generations, including my own in 1960. The journey began with two families leaving Britain in 1820 to settle in South Africa, followed by three others at later dates, culminating in my return to Britain after Sharpeville.

These experiences sparked my curiosity about the psychological effects of leaving one's kith and kin and the challenges they faced. I observed that while some individuals experienced trauma that was too great to bear, others flourished. Migrants often become displaced, alienated, and unsure of where they belong. Their stories must be heard, as their descendants need to understand what they inherited from their forefathers.
