Migrants face physical dangers during perilous border crossings between Central and North America, but they also face legal, social, and economic mortality. These issues are deeply rooted in histories of colonialism and conquest, where exclusionary policies and practices target racialized and dispossessed individuals in transit. Once in the new land, migrants encounter a web of systems that strip them of their personhood, deny them resources, and create additional obstacles that hinder their ability to live fully.

Laws and policies that perpetuate restrictive immigration practices and capitalist systems of exploitation and inequality contribute to the ongoing struggles of migrants. The contributors to this anthology, Migration and Mortality, examine these issues while highlighting the resilience and collective resistance of migrants.

The case studies in this collection shed light on border deaths, detention economies, asylum seeking, and the public health and mental health of migrants. These examples of oppression and survival contribute to our understanding of broader movements for life and justice in the Americas.

It is essential to recognize the interconnectedness of these issues and work towards policies that promote human rights, dignity, and equality for all migrants. This includes addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty, conflict, and climate change, and providing safe and legal pathways for migration. Additionally, it is crucial to support migrants' access to healthcare, education, and social services, as well as to address the systemic discrimination and marginalization they face in their new communities.

By acknowledging the mortality and oppression faced by migrants, we can work towards a more just and compassionate world where everyone has the opportunity to live a full and dignified life.
