  • More about Milton Keynes Buses

Milton Keynes was designed for car owners, but public transport has provided a vital link for many. The large shopping centre opened in 1979 became the focus point, and United Counties provided the backbone of services until 1986. At deregulation, 100 minibuses were brought to the area, and independents now run several routes. National Express has a coachway located by the Park & Ride to provide further interest.

Fifty years ago, Milton Keynes was designated as a new town, primarily designed with the car owner in mind. However, public transport has played a crucial role in connecting the community. The expansive shopping center, which opened in 1979, became a central hub for both town and country routes. Adjacent to the new rail station, an underused bus station was situated a short distance away. United Counties initially provided the backbone of services in Milton Keynes until 1986, when Milton Keynes Citybus took over. The deregulation of services in the late 1980s brought about a significant change. Almost 100 minibuses were introduced to the area, followed by larger buses over the next decade. The ownership of the buses underwent several changes over the next fifteen years, culminating in Arriva's acquisition in 2001. Today, the Milton Keynes bus scene is characterized by a mix of independent operators and major players. Stagecoach operates services from its Bedford, Northampton, and Kettering depots, while National Express has a coachway located by the Park & Ride to offer additional interest. In this book, Gary Seamarks takes us on a visual journey through the diverse fleet of buses that serve Milton Keynes.
