  • More about Mining the Landscape: The Archaeology of Mount Shamrock

Mining was a significant element of colonial enterprise in Australia, and landscape archaeology provides a theoretical perspective to understand how people created and understood their place. Gold mining has been a focus of study due to its impact and narrative, but archaeology has traditionally focused on the industrial aspects. This work addresses this by using a landscape-based approach that integrates the social and industrial, demonstrating how this methodology can enhance our understanding of the past. The case study of Mount Shamrock, a gold-mining town in Queensland, Australia, provides an exemplar of the application of landscape theory to Australian historical archaeology. These concepts and approaches are of universal interest.

Mining played a significant role in colonial enterprise in Australia, influencing movement on colonial frontiers. In the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, gold mining underwent transformations that affected both the land and the way people engaged with the landscape. Landscape archaeology offers a theoretical framework that helps us understand how people created and understood their place in the world. The impact and narrative surrounding gold mining have made it a long-standing focus of study, encompassing both historical and archaeological approaches. Traditionally, mining archaeology has been categorized under industrial archaeology, relying on historical, economic, and technological evidence. However, this is changing, with a growing recognition of the social aspects of mining. While industrial/technology-based studies have traditionally dominated, there is a need to bridge the gap between industrial and social/household-based archaeological studies. This work addresses this challenge by adopting a landscape-based approach that captures the nuanced, meaningful, and experienced mining landscape. By integrating the social and industrial dimensions, the case study of Mount Shamrock, a gold-mining town in Queensland, Australia, demonstrates how this methodology can enhance our understanding of the past. The work presents an integration of social and industrial perspectives in a mining settlement, providing an exemplar in the application of a landscape-based approach to mining archaeology.
