  • More about Misogyny as Hate Crime

Misogyny as Hate Crime explores the background, nature, and consequences of misogyny as well as the legal framework and UK policy responses associated with it. It takes an intersectional approach, looking at how experiences of misogyny may intersect with other forms of hate crime such as disablism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, and transphobia. The increasing importance of the internet has seen misogyny move into these digital spaces, but has also provided a platform for movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp, highlighting the scale of sexual harassment and abuse. In 2016, Nottinghamshire Police and Nottingham Womens Centre became the first force in England and Wales to record misogyny as a hate crime. The Law Commission of England and Wales has undertaken a review of the legislation on hate crime and has suggested adding sex or gender to the protected characteristics. The murder of Sarah Everard has been a 'watershed moment' in the Government's response to violence against women.

Misogyny as Hate Crime delves into the intricate background, nature, and far-reaching consequences of misogyny, while also examining the legal framework and policy responses associated with it as a form of hate crime in the United Kingdom. Adopting an intersectional approach, the book explores how experiences of misogyny intersect with other forms of hate crime, such as disablism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, and transphobia.

From the sexist and derogatory comments made by former US President Donald Trump to legislative changes in Chile and Peru criminalizing street harassment, misogyny poses a significant challenge to scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and women worldwide. The increasing prominence of the internet has seen misogyny migrate into these digital spaces, but it has also provided a platform for movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, shedding light on the pervasive scale of sexual harassment and abuse. In 2016, Nottinghamshire Police, in partnership with Nottingham Women's Centre, became the first force in England and Wales to record misogyny as a hate crime. Since then, other police forces have introduced similar schemes to combat misogyny. More recently, the Law Commission of England and Wales conducted a review of hate crime legislation and proposed the inclusion of sex or gender as protected characteristics in the law. In March 2021, the Government announced that police forces in England and Wales will be mandated to record crimes motivated by hostility based on sex or gender from this autumn. The tragic murder of Sarah Everard in March 2021 has been a pivotal moment in the Government's response to violence against women. Everard's kidnapping and murder, which occurred while she was walking home from a friend's flat in South London on March 3, 2021, sparked a nationwide conversation about violence against women and led to significant changes in legislation and public awareness.
