Harry was a bomber command pilot in 1939-40. At a time when the fighter squadrons were rightly earning the gratitude of a nation, Harry and his colleagues were carrying out no less a service in their efforts to halt the advance of the German war machine across Europe. Harry carried out observation and bombing missions against army and navy targets in France and Norway. William, the older brother had joined the Royal Artillery in 1930. After periods of duty in Aden and Hong Kong he was transferred to Singapore in 1939. When the Japanese launched their ‘impossible attack on the jewel in Britains far eastern crown William was there waiting for them … but not from the direction they came.
William was a gunner in the 10th Royal Artillery Regiment, part of the 7th Indian Division. The division had been sent to Singapore in 1939 to defend the island against a possible Japanese invasion. On the night of December 8th, 1941, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on the island, landing troops on the beaches and airfields around Singapore. The British and Indian troops fought bravely but were outnumbered and outgunned by the Japanese.
William and his colleagues were ordered to defend the vital airfield at Changi, which was the key to the British defense of the island. They fought for hours, with the Japanese attacking from all sides. William and his gunners managed to hold off the Japanese for several days, but eventually, they were overwhelmed and forced to surrender.
Harry, meanwhile, was flying his bomber over France when he received word of the Japanese attack on Singapore. He immediately changed course and headed for the island, carrying out bombing missions against Japanese troops and ships. He flew over the beaches at Changi and saw the devastation that the Japanese had caused. He knew that he had to do everything he could to help the British and Indian troops on the ground.
Harry carried out several bombing missions over the next few weeks, targeting Japanese troops and ships in the waters around Singapore. He also flew reconnaissance missions over the island, gathering information about the Japanese positions and movements. His efforts were not in vain, and he helped to soften up the Japanese defenses before the British and Indian troops launched their counterattack.
William and Harry Warman were two ordinary local lads who made an extraordinary contribution to the war effort. They fought bravely and selflessly, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Their story is a reminder of the bravery and resilience of the ordinary people who fought in World WarTwo, and of the sacrifices that they made to defend their countries and their freedoms.
