This captivating book presents commuting as a groundbreaking paradigm in mobility studies, particularly within the context of the global south. It delves deep into the realm of suburban train commuting in Eastern India, offering a fresh perspective on this daily phenomenon. The author interprets commuting as not just a means to reach work but also as a dynamic process that generates kinetic event-spaces, infused with a multitude of mobile practices that transcend geographical boundaries. Rather than being solely determined by their fixed locations, these practices can be perceived and understood.

The book undertakes an in-depth analysis of suburban train commuting's role in the metropolitan expansion of Kolkata, as well as the transformative impact it has had on rural spaces. It sheds light on the commuters' experiencescape, unveiling the intricate tapestry of emotions, sensations, and interactions that shape their journey. Furthermore, the book explores the subjective realm of gendered commuting, examining how gender norms and stereotypes influence the experiences and perceptions of women commuters.

To accomplish its research objectives, the book employs a trans-disciplinary research design, seamlessly blending quantitative and ethnographic research methods. The empirical research was conducted on the Howrah-Bardhaman Main Railway Line, which is considered the first suburban railway line in Eastern India. A diverse group of commuters, originating from three adjacent districts of Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah, participated in this study. Additionally, non-commuting passengers and hawkers aboard the train were interviewed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the diverse perspectives associated with commuting.

This book serves as a valuable resource for scholars and researchers in the fields of mobility studies, transport studies, urban geography, and regional planning. It offers insightful insights into the complex dynamics of commuting, shedding light on the social, economic, and environmental factors that shape this vital aspect of our lives. By exploring the experiences of commuters from different backgrounds and genders, the book contributes to our understanding of the diverse ways in which mobility shapes our cities and societies.
