  • More about Monotheism in Christian Liturgy

The focus of this Element is on the diverse ways in which Christians address, turn to, and worship God in their central rituals and celebrations, examining the purity of monotheism expressed in official liturgical sources from different Christian Churches. A thorough study of the essential doxological nature of Christian liturgy is key to unlocking this complex and multi-layered reality.

In accordance with a profound theological understanding of liturgy as the Church at prayer (ecclesia orans), the focus of this Element is on the diverse ways in which Christians address, turn to, and worship God in their central rituals and celebrations. By examining a representative sample of official liturgical sources from various Christian Churches, the question arises: How pure is the monotheism expressed in these sources? It is possible to argue that there is some ambiguity involved, particularly in relation to (i) the peculiar position of Christ, the Son of God, and God the Father in liturgical prayers, and (ii) the veneration of the saints. To unlock this complex and multi-layered reality, a meticulous study of the essential doxological nature of Christian liturgy is necessary, both from a phenomenological point of view and through fine textual analyses.
