  • More about Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter in the 1970s (Decades)

Silence, a Hereford group, formed in 1969 by Ian Hunter and became one of Britain's most popular live acts. They split in 1972 but were encouraged to reform by David Bowie and found immediate chart success with All the Young Dudes. After two years of hits, Ian left and enjoyed a chequered solo career. The rest of the group shortened their name to Mott and then British Lions but failed to re-establish themselves. Despite this, they released inspired, individual music that inspired and was championed by other acts, notably Queen, the Clash, and Def Leppard.

When the Hereford group Silence joined forces with the talented songwriter Ian Hunter in 1969, their ambition was to create a unique fusion of influences that drew inspiration from Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and Procol Harum. Their remarkable talent and undeniable charisma quickly propelled them to become one of the most beloved live acts in Britain. However, despite their immense popularity, it took some time for them to achieve widespread success with a major hit single and an album.

In 1972, disillusionment and exhaustion set in, leading to the group's split. It was at this point that David Bowie stepped in and played a pivotal role in their reform. Encouraged by Bowie's belief in their potential, Silence reunited and experienced an immediate surge in chart success with a song he generously gifted them, "All the Young Dudes." This track became an instant hit, solidifying their comeback and establishing them as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

After two years of chart-topping hits and internal conflicts, Ian decided to embark on a solo career. Initially, he collaborated with guitarist Mick Ronson, a partnership that produced some memorable music. Unfortunately, Ronson's untimely death in 1993 marked the end of this collaboration.

The remaining members of Silence, now known as Mott, continued their journey. They briefly changed their name to British Lions, a collaboration with former Medicine Head front man John Fiddler. Despite their efforts, they were unable to re-establish themselves and faced challenges in regaining their former glory.

Throughout the 1970s, Silence released a series of inspired and highly individual albums that showcased their musical prowess. Their music resonated with audiences, inspiring and being championed by other notable acts such as Queen, the Clash, and Def Leppard.

In Ian Hunter's own words, he acknowledged that rock 'n' roll was a game of ups and downs. They may have experienced victories and defeats, but their legacy lies in the timeless and influential music they created during this era. Silence's journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and the enduring impact of music on generations.
