  • More about Moving Culturally-Based Sororities and Fraternities Forward: Innovations in Practice

Greek letter organizations have a history of exclusion, particularly towards minoritized people. Culturally-based sororities and fraternities (CBSFs) emerged as a response to this oppression, but conversations on sorority and fraternity life have often prioritized historically white organizations. This book offers a resistance to these power dynamics and highlights the histories, legacies, and strengths of CBSFs. It is an important resource for SFL practitioners, (inter)national sorority and fraternity leadership, and all SFL members who want to increase their awareness of CBSFs and support equitable practices on campuses.

Greek letter organizations have a long history of exclusion that has targeted marginalized groups, including Black, Indigenous, People of Color, as well as queer and transgender individuals. In response to the broader societal oppression and historical discriminatory practices within historically white sororities and fraternities, culturally-based sororities and fraternities (CBSFs) emerged to serve and uplift minoritized communities. CBSFs encompass a wide range of organizations, including Asian American, Black, Latinx/a/o, LGBTQ, Multicultural, and Historically Native American sororities and fraternities. However, conversations on sorority and fraternity life (SFL) have often prioritized historically white organizations, perpetuating the same legacies of oppression that led to the formation of culturally-based groups. This book serves as a form of resistance to these power dynamics and highlights the histories, legacies, and strengths of CBSFs, as well as strategies for re-envisioning equitable support for these organizations. It will be valuable to SFL practitioners, (inter)national sorority and fraternity leadership, and all SFL members in their efforts to increase awareness of CBSFs. Additionally, campuses are increasingly recognizing the importance of understanding the experiences of minoritized students and centering equitable practices. This book can be used in professional development workshops for deans, faculty, and student affairs professionals to assess how well they are supporting minoritized students, particularly those in culturally-based sororities and fraternities. It can also serve as a valuable resource for college courses focused on college students, student affairs, and social justice.
