  • More about Multispecies Leisure: Human-Animal Interactions in Leisure Landscapes

Multispecies Leisure: Human-Animal Interactions in Leisure Landscapes explores how leisure activities, experiences, and landscapes are shaped by multispecies encounters between humans, other animals, birds, insects, plants, and the environment. It contributes to a greater understanding of leisure as a complex, multispecies phenomenon by examining the "contact zones" between humans and other species.

Format: Paperback / softback

Multispecies Leisure: Human-Animal Interactions in Leisure Landscapes aims to integrate animals into the realm of leisure studies and enhance our understanding of leisure as a multifaceted and interconnected phenomenon. The emerging field of human-animal studies encourages researchers to broaden their perspective beyond human-centric practices and ways of being in the world, recognizing that humans and non-human beings share ecological, social, cultural, and political spaces. While there have been exceptions, leisure studies has been relatively slow to embrace the "animal turn" and explore how leisure activities, experiences, and landscapes are shaped by multispecies encounters between humans, other animals, birds, insects, plants, and the environment.

This book seeks to bridge this gap by presenting research that considers leisure as more-than-human experiences. The authors explore the "contact zones" between humans and other species, considering how leisure interacts with nonhuman others (such as dogs, horses), affects those others (such as environmental concerns), and is influenced by the non-human (such as landscape, weather). By doing so, this work contributes to a deeper understanding of leisure as a complex, multispecies phenomenon.

The chapters in this book were originally published as a Special Issue of the Leisure Studies journal.
