In 1959, the Red Rose County boasted a vibrant array of twenty-seven Corporation Transport systems. However, a significant transformation awaited the county in the following years. In 1969, a pivotal moment occurred with the establishment of the Passenger Transport Executives in Manchester and Liverpool, which marked a further reduction in these transportation systems. This reduction continued in 1974, following a reorganisation of local government that resulted in boundary changes and the creation of new administrative boroughs. As a result, the remaining Corporation Transport systems were significantly diminished.
The 1990s witnessed a dramatic turn of events as all but two of the remaining systems were privatised, following the deregulation of bus services in 1986. Rossendale, however, held on to its own transport organisation until 2018, when it too was acquired by Transdev, leaving Blackpool Transport as the sole council-owned operator within the redrawn county boundary.
This book takes readers on a captivating journey, picking up the story after the local government reorganisation of 1974. It showcases a comprehensive selection of photographs that vividly depict the closing years of all the Corporation Transport systems in Lancashire. Through these images, readers are transported back to a time when these systems played a vital role in connecting communities and facilitating transportation within the county.
The book offers a poignant glimpse into the history and evolution of transportation in Lancashire, highlighting the changes and challenges that the county has faced over the years. It sheds light on the decisions that were made, the impact they had on the communities, and the legacy that remains today. Whether you are a transportation enthusiast, a history buff, or simply interested in the social and economic aspects of this period, this book provides a valuable and insightful perspective on the closing years of Lancashires Corporation Transport systems.
