On the maiden voyage of the opulent Mauretania, George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield set sail from Liverpool to New York in November 1907. They are once more working as private detectives for the Cunard Line, and they pretend to be passengers on what turns out to be a very eventful crossing. Dillman is crucial in saving a crew member from being washed overboard in bad weather, but he is unable to save one of the first-class passengers from the same fate. At first, it appears to be a case of death by misadventure, but is the presence of a record shipment of gold bullion on board just too much of a coincidence? Before it's too late, Dillman and Genevieve must figure out the murder's motive.
The Mauretania was the largest moving structure ever constructed at the time of her launch. She would subsequently serve as a WWI hospital and troop ship. Mauretania was returned to civilian use after the war and scrapped in the middle of the 1930s. The Ocean Liner series is being reintroduced for a new generation of readers after being previously published under the name Conrad Allen.
