The Kent State University Press is thrilled to reintroduce these timeless true crime detective tales by Allan Pinkerton, the Scottish-American detective and spy who established the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1850. At the peak of its influence, his agency was the world's largest private law enforcement organization, and its iconic logo, featuring a large, unblinking eye, served as the inspiration for the term "private eye."

In "The Murderer and the Fortune Teller," Captain J. N. Sumner, from Springfield, Massachusetts, seeks the assistance of Pinkerton to unravel a crime involving his sisters and the ownership of a family farm. His younger sister, Annie, falls under the spell of a married man, Mr. Pattmore, who vows to marry Annie once his wife and her brother are out of the way. Captain Sumner possesses an opal ring with a stone that appears to foretell events. However, after experiencing a sudden and severe illness, he becomes convinced that Annie is attempting to poison him to claim his fortune, including the precious ring.

Recognizing Annie's superstitious nature, Pinkerton employs one of his female detectives to pose as a fortune teller and meet with Annie. But as the story unfolds, it becomes evident that Pinkerton may have encountered more than he bargained for. Is Annie genuinely trying to kill her brother, or is she being controlled by a more malevolent force? Is Captain Sumner's ring authentic? These questions and many more are intricately woven throughout this captivating tale of adultery, politics, superstition, manipulation, and murder.
