  • More about Naming the Lost: The Fresno Poets: Interviews and Essays

A collection of poetry by Fresno State students and colleagues of Philip Levine, Peter Everwine, C.G. Hanclicek, and other poets who taught at Fresno State in the early 1960s. One-third of the poets are no longer with us.

Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 180 pages
Publication date: 30 June 2023
Publisher: Stephen F. Austin State University Press

In 1958, Philip Levine graced Fresno State with his teaching presence, and shortly after, in 1962, Peter Everwine joined him. The literary landscape of Fresno was further enriched in 1966 when C.G. Hanclicek arrived, and a remarkable group of Fresno poets gathered under his tutelage. Tragically, approximately one-third of the poets featured in Naming the Lost have passed away. This book, therefore, takes a poignant turn, focusing on the early 1960s community of poets that emerged in Fresno. It explores the profound connection and camaraderie that formed among these talented individuals, showcasing the extraordinary providence that brought them together. From the early 1960s to the 1980s, Fresno witnessed a remarkable confluence and coincidence of poetic talent and personalities, a phenomenon unlikely to be repeated. Naming the Lost serves as a testament to this vibrant literary community, preserving the essence of their collective creativity and the enduring impact they left on the world of poetry.
