Due to the absence of local higher education institutions in the 16th century, Wittenberg emerged as the most significant university for Protestants in Hungary. By the end of the century, approximately 1200 students resided in Wittenberg, with 430 of them being direct pupils of Melanchthon between 1522 and 1560. The Coetus, a scholarly society, was established on June 24th, 1555, during Wittenberg University's flourishing era. Melanchthon played a pivotal role in the creation of the Coetus, serving as the chair of the regular biweekly disputations of the community until his passing. When examining the list of names, it becomes evident that Melanchthon was a common denominator in the first ten years, and although the majority of the members gradually shifted towards supporting the Swiss Reformation over time, Melanchthon remained a prominent figure.
