This comprehensive volume aims to enhance our current understanding of clinical features, treatment, and pathogenic aspects of necrotizing soft tissue infections. To achieve this, a series of representative case studies are presented, providing readers with a deeper insight into these complex diseases.

Necrotizing soft tissue infections are highly devastating infections that can lead to extensive tissue or limb loss, multiorgan failure, and a significant fatality rate. It is widely accepted that timely diagnosis and prompt intervention are crucial factors in determining survival. The initial presentation of these infections may be characterized by vague symptoms such as tenderness, swelling, erythema, and pain. Consequently, diagnosing and managing necrotizing soft tissue infections poses significant challenges due to the heterogeneity in clinical presentation, co-morbidities, microbiological aetiology, and pathogenic mechanisms.

Over the past six years, an international and multidisciplinary consortium known as INFECT has been diligently pursuing research to advance our understanding of the clinical and pathogenic aspects of these infections. A central objective of this consortium has been to establish a comprehensive clinical registry and associated biobank, which serve as the foundation for experimental studies. By leveraging the INFECT patient cohort and employing an integrated systems biology approach, researchers have gained advanced insights into diagnostic features, causative microbial agents, treatment strategies, and pathogenic mechanisms.

This volume encompasses a wide range of topics, including the clinical presentation and evolution of necrotizing soft tissue infections, the role of host and bacterial disease traits in disease progression, the identification of diagnostic markers and biomarkers, the development of novel treatment modalities, and the exploration of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Each chapter is authored by experts in the field, providing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to readers.

By delving into these complex issues, this volume aims to provide healthcare professionals with a better understanding of necrotizing soft tissue infections, enabling them to make informed decisions and provide optimal care to patients. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and practitioners alike, fostering collaboration and advancing the field of infectious diseases.
