Graftons recently completed the Marshall Building for the London School of Economics (LSE), situated across Lincolns Inn Fields from the Sir John Soanes Museum, the residence of renowned Georgian architect John Soane. This new neighbor drew significant inspiration from the architecture of the Museum, particularly Soanes masterful use of light and other historic buildings in the area. The outcome is a graceful, expressive, and democratic new space that fosters learning, debate, and creativity, much like the Museum.
To commemorate this relationship, an exhibition will be held at the Sir John Soanes Museum from October 2022 to January 2023. Contributing authors will explore the architecture of Graftons Marshall Building and the Soane Museum by pairing Soane drawings from the Museums collection with Graftons own drawings and in-progress photographs of the Marshall Building, which are published for the first time. This approach highlights architecture as a craft that has been shared across centuries.
In addition to its architectural significance, this innovative publication also serves as a sketchbook. Printed sections are interleaved with 16 pages of high-quality drawing paper, and a pocket at the back is provided for collected materials.
