  • More about New Business Models for the Reuse of Secondary Resources from WEEEs: The FENIX Project

This open-access book summarizes research being pursued within the FENIX project, funded by the EU community under the H2020 program, which aims to design a new product-service paradigm that can promote innovative business models, open up added value to vessels, and create new market segments. The project experiments and validates its approach on three new concepts of added-value specialized vessels that can run requested services for several maritime sectors in the most effective, efficient, economic, valuable, and eco-friendly way. The three vessels share a lean design methodology, IoT tools, and HPC simulation strategy, which combines real operative data at sea with lean methodology to support the development and implementation of the vessel concepts.

This open-access book provides a comprehensive summary of research being carried out within the FENIX project, which is funded by the EU community under the H2020 program. The primary objective of the project is to design a new product-service paradigm that can promote innovative business models, enhance the value of vessels, and create new market segments. To achieve this, the project conducts experiments and validates its approach on three novel concepts of specialized vessels capable of delivering requested services to various maritime sectors in the most effective, efficient, economic, valuable, and eco-friendly manner.

The three vessels share a common lean design methodology, IoT tools, and HPC simulation strategy. This approach involves a lean fact-based design model that combines real operational data at sea with lean methodology to support the development and implementation of vessel concepts. IT-customized tools are employed to enable the acquisition, processing, and utilization of onboard and local weather data through an IoT platform, providing business services to different stakeholders. HPC simulation is used to create a virtual towing tank environment for early vessel design improvement and testing.

The book demonstrates the importance of conducting an integrated LCC analysis and developing an LCC strategy to ensure the sustainability of vessel concepts and prioritize environmental attention within the maritime industry. By adopting these practices, the project aims to contribute to the development of a more efficient and environmentally responsible maritime sector.
