  • More about New Literary Voices of the Moroccan Diaspora: Republic of Cousins

The study of a body of texts written in French, Spanish, Catalan, and Dutch by Judeo-Moroccan authors is the first to be done in this comparative study. It seeks to re-conceptualize the idea of a 'Moroccan literature' with regard to the transnational and multilingual experiences from which it arises, drawing on theoretical insights from Fatima Mernissi and Abdelmalek Sayad. The literary techniques used in the texts highlight their poetic qualities while also addressing their political relevance in the intercultural relations between Morocco and Europe.

The intense discussion surrounding Moroccos diasporic minorities in Europe has sparked a growing fascination with the literary creations of these 'new Europeans.' This comparative study stands as the first to examine a collection of texts, encompassing contemporary Judeo-Moroccan literature written in French, Spanish, Catalan, and Dutch, which have previously been overlooked as a collective. Given the diverse spectrum of literary output, the primary objective of this book is not to confine individual works of literature to their specific 'national place of origin.' Instead, it seeks to redefine the concept of 'Moroccan literature' in light of the transnational and multilingual experiences that give rise to it. By drawing upon a diverse array of theoretical perspectives, ranging from Fatima Mernissis notion of female subalternity to Abdelmalek Sayads principle of the immigrants 'absent history, this book facilitates a re-evaluation of the interplay between migration and postcolonial literary studies. A meticulous examination of the literary techniques employed in the texts under scrutiny herein reveals their poetic allure, while simultaneously acknowledging their political significance in addressing the intercultural dynamics between Morocco and Europe, particularly as they unfold across the Mediterranean and beyond.
