Mid-March 2020: native New Yorker Gregory Peterson finds himself on an early evening stroll through the bustling city, abruptly halted by the unforeseen coronavirus pandemic. The once-grand public spaces of Manhattan stand desolate, with the monumental Lincoln Center Plaza devoid of any life. The familiar sounds of skates gliding on the ice and the bustling energy of tourists and workers at Rockefeller Center fade into silence. On Easter Sunday, the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine remains eerily quiet, a sight never witnessed before. Peterson, determined to avoid public transportation, embarked on a journey on foot and by bike, traversing the streets of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens throughout the spring and summer of 2020. Armed with his iPhone 11, he meticulously captured over 400 photographs of over 200 locations, showcasing a surreal tapestry of landmarks. From the United Nations Secretariat devoid of any traffic, people, or flags to Grand Central Terminal appearing as an empty ghost town, Peterson's lens revealed a city transformed by the absence of its inhabitants. These photographs offer a unique perspective, unveiling a serene beauty that often goes unnoticed amidst the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced lives. They invite us to see New York with fresh eyes, appreciating its timeless allure and quiet majesty.
