  • More about Nimrod

The Nimrod was a modified version of the de Havilland Comet airliner that was used by the RAF for maritime reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and anti-surface warfare. It was in service from the late 1960s to 2011 and saw action during the Falklands War, the Gulf Wars, Afghanistan, and Operation Tapestry.

The Nimrod, with its origins dating back to the late 1940s and the de Havilland Comet airliner, already possessed a storied pedigree when it emerged in the late 1960s to replace the Avro Shackleton in the Maritime Reconnaissance role. The RAF commissioned fewer than fifty Nimrods, and these aircraft underwent continuous upgrades throughout their service life, culminating in their retirement in 2011. In contrast to the Shackleton, the Nimrod offered enhanced comfort and reliability to its diverse range of long-range activities, encompassing anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and anti-surface warfare. The Nimrod played a significant role in various conflicts, including the Falklands War, the Gulf Wars, Afghanistan, and a sustained commitment (since 1977) to Operation Tapestry, which safeguards the UK's Sovereign Sea Areas. Specialized versions of the Nimrod also fulfilled the signals intelligence role, while other proposed developments, such as the Airborne Early Warning role and the ultimately costly MRA.4 versions, did not enter RAF service. This book delves into the captivating story of this remarkable aircraft.
