- More about Nitrogen Isotopes in Deep Time
Nitrogen stable isotope geochemistry is a powerful tool for understanding the evolution of the global N cycle in deep time, but preservation, unambiguous interpretations, and local versus global effects need to be considered. Case studies illustrate the importance of depositional and stratigraphic context in interpreting δ15N records in ancient marine sediments.

Nitrogen, a vital component for life, has seen its sources and cycling evolve throughout Earth's history. Stable isotope ratios of nitrogen compounds, measured in units of δ15N (expressed in ‰), are preserved in sedimentary records, allowing for tracking of these changes and providing valuable insights into associated biogeochemical feedbacks. In this review, we explore the application of nitrogen stable isotope geochemistry in unraveling the evolution of the global N cycle across deep time. We address challenges related to preservation, interpretative ambiguity, and the distinction between local and global effects. We conclude with several case studies highlighting the importance of depositional and stratigraphic context in accurately interpreting δ15N records in ancient marine sediments, spanning both ancient anoxic (Archean) and more recent well-oxygenated (Phanerozoic) environments.
Nitrogen, a fundamental element for life, has undergone diverse sources and cycling throughout Earth's history. Stable isotope ratios of nitrogen compounds, quantified in units of δ15N (represented in ‰), are preserved within sedimentary records, enabling the tracing of these changes and offering valuable insights into associated biogeochemical feedbacks. In this comprehensive review, we delve into the utilization of nitrogen stable isotope geochemistry in deciphering the evolution of the global N cycle across vast temporal spans. We address challenges related to preservation, interpretive ambiguity, and the distinction between local and global effects. We conclude with several illustrative case studies emphasizing the significance of depositional and stratigraphic context in accurately interpreting δ15N records in ancient marine sediments, encompassing both ancient anoxic (Archean) and more recent well-oxygenated (Phanerozoic) environments.
