The concept of "no humans involved" gained prominence in the aftermath of the 1991 beating of Rodney King, when it was revealed that the Los Angeles Police Department was using the term as a convenient shorthand for casework involving Black and Latino men, as well as sex workers. In 1994, Jamaican scholar and theorist Sylvia Wynter issued a challenge to her academic colleagues, urging them to consider how their own cultural mindset might be contributing to the exclusionary definition of human. Wynter specifically highlighted the profound influence of race on the concept of the human and the resulting social hierarchies and injustices that stem from this connection.
To address Wynter's prompt, "No Humans Involved" collects a diverse range of works by contemporary artists. These artists employ various mediums, such as large-scale rubber casts of trees by Eddie Aparicio, which document social and economic relationships between Latin America and the United States; portraits created out of culturally relevant found objects and recycled materials by Tau Lewis; and performance, sculpture, photography, and other forms of artistic expression by Wilmer Wilson IV, which explore the marginalization of Black bodies in social relations.
Through their artwork, these artists provide a contemporary response to Wynter's call to action, addressing the social divisions prevalent in our society today and exploring potential avenues for social unity. Their contributions to the field of art offer a powerful lens through which to examine the complexities of human identity, race, and social hierarchies, and inspire us to work towards a more inclusive and equitable world.
