This book examines patterns of behavior during an era of mass brutality by analyzing, in a transnational context, mechanisms of violence and ethnic cleansing in the Balkan Wars of 1912–13. It challenges western, Eurocentric dominance of historiography about the First World War and discusses how the collective experience of war generated an undeclared 'war on the sidelines.

This book delves into the patterns of behavior during a period of widespread brutality by examining, in a transnational context, the mechanisms of violence and ethnic cleansing that occurred during the Balkan Wars of 1912–13. The primary objective is to integrate these conflicts into the broader discourse of the Greater War (1917–1923), thereby challenging the Western, Eurocentric dominance of historiography regarding the First World War. Unlike previous works in political, diplomatic, and military history of the Balkan Wars, this book focuses on the events that transpired behind the front lines. Panagiotis Delis explores the interactions between the regular army, irregulars, and local civilians, and discusses how the collective experience of war gave rise to an undeclared "war on the sidelines."

The Balkan Wars hold a unique position in the history of twentieth-century violence, often overlooked in Western scholarship. As Panagiotis Delis demonstrates in his excellent book, many of the logics and practices of violence that would later dominate Europe between 1914 and 1945 were anticipated in the Balkan Wars. This book is a meticulously researched and skillfully analyzed study of violence at the local level, providing a valuable comparative perspective on several Balkan borderlands.

Panagiotis Delis holds a Ph.D. in history from Simon Fraser University. He currently serves as a permanent civil servant.
