The Collarii Foundation is in charge of Gustave Post's estate, but the heirs are unreliable and at odds. When an important Post appears for sale, Corey Templeton is asked to investigate to identify the owner. Templeton uses Waverley Smith, who is both a boon and a liability, to get close to the heirs. As the investigation proceeds, damaging discoveries are made about Post's actions nearly four decades before, and it becomes clear that the foundation must keep control of Post's reputation and maintain his blue-chip status.

When a deceased artist, with an estate of almost incalculable worth, leaves behind heirs at war, the question arises: who will heal the rifts? While there will undoubtedly be a multitude of advisors, can they bring peace to the warring factions? The estate of renowned artist Gustave Post is in the hands of the Collarii Foundation, which administers it to protect his life's work. However, the heirs are fractious and unreliable, making the situation challenging.

When an important but unknown Post appears for sale, suspicions arise that one of the heirs is attempting to sell it anonymously, in contravention of their obligations to the foundation. The foundation seeks the expertise of Corey Templeton, an expert in Post's work, to undertake a clandestine investigation to identify the owner. Templeton enlists the assistance of his assistant, Waverley Smith, who is both attractive and a liability.

As the investigation proceeds, Templeton becomes entangled in Smith's unscrupulous methods. He soon discovers that Post had a dark past, with actions taken nearly four decades before that have damaging consequences. This revelation sets the stage for a tale that affirms the myth of the demonic artist genius, a dream of any biographer.

The foundation faces the task of maintaining Post's reputation and blue-chip status, while Templeton struggles to keep his equilibrium as emotions run high on all sides. The question remains: can they navigate the complexities of the estate and the conflicting interests of the heirs to preserve Post's legacy?
