The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has a remarkable history, having saved over 144,000 lives since its founding in 1824. The initiative was sparked by Sir William Hillary's proposal to establish a National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck. This vision continues to guide the RNLI's mission today.

The charity relies heavily on the dedicated service of volunteers, supported by a vast network of fundraisers from diverse backgrounds. Beyond its traditional life-saving role, the RNLI now employs lifeguards, conducts water safety education, and engages in international humanitarian work.

However, the journey of the RNLI has not always been smooth. In April 1852, the Lifeboat Journal observed that lifeboats were insufficient in number, often lacking proper design and construction, and sometimes unsuitable for the local conditions they were stationed in. This book delves into the creation of the Institution and its early founders, exploring how they responded to the inevitable challenges and external pressures over the past 200 years.

It sheds light on many unsung heroes and heroines, as well as lesser-known rescues, providing a comprehensive account of the RNLI's achievements. The RNLI has overcome numerous obstacles, emerging as one of the UK and Ireland's most respected organizations. This remarkable journey is a testament to determination, acumen, skill, and bravery.

More than 700 names are inscribed on the RNLI Memorial at the RNLI Support Centre in Poole, Dorset, serving as a lasting tribute to the selflessness of those who have sacrificed their lives for the cause. The author and publishers hope that this book will serve as a fitting tribute to these individuals and their remarkable contributions.
